As a Scottish wedding photographer, one of the biggest challenges I face is the weather and how I can adapt to it.
Surprisingly, rain isn’t too much of a problem as I’ve rarely photographed a wedding where it rained the whole day. Temperature, is probably more of a problem as when it’s too cold or windy than there’s a limit to how long people can stay outdoors. In Scotland, it’s usually the cold but on the 25th July we had our warmest day of the year with temperatures of 28 degrees Celsius with no cloud cover.
Although every bride and groom dreams of a warm sunny day for their wedding photography, as a photographer, there’s nothing worse than a harsh overhead sun as it’s not very comfortable to stand under for long periods, cast dark shadows and makes everyone squint. On day’s like this, the only answer is to find some cover!
Fortunately at the New Lanark Mill Hotel, which us about 30 miles south of Glasgow, there are plenty of options for different times of the year. Opposite the hotel are gardens with mature trees which offer some perfect shade. There is also a nice park on the edge of the village which is a short walk away. Once you get a bit of relief from the harsh sun, everyone can start to cool down and relax. This is the type of atmosphere I like to create so I can get natural relaxed shots of the bride and groom.
