It turned out to be a glorious day for Emma and Daryl’s wedding photography at Ayrshire’s Waterside Hotel. In fact, given the amazing summer we’ve been having it turned out to be almost typical weather.
The Waterside Hotel, near West Kilbride in Ayrshire is a very popular venue for weddings. For wedding photography, it has a lot of offer, especially the nearby beach which has stunning views over to Arran. There are also nice grounds at the rear which are for exclusive use of the wedding party.
Emma wanted me to cover the bridal preparations and the bridal suite at The Waterside was perfect for this. The apartment itself is great but it also has a balcony overlooking the sea which was perfect for some relaxed shots of her with her Mum and the bridesmaids. The theme of The Waterside Hotel is very much a beach resort. The balcony had some nice weathered looking decking, which made a wonderful background for some detailed shots of the Emma’s shoes and flowers.
Although everyone dreams of a lovely sunny day for their wedding, for a wedding photographer it does present some challenges, although this is easy to overcome and I have years of experience in dealing with this. The two main challenges are strong dark shadows over people’s faces, which don’t look very good and people having to squint in the sun. I always carrying portable lighting with me, which gives me full control over any shadows and am very conscious of people having to look towards the sun. I always position people very carefully to avoid this.
The other challenge we had on the day was the heat, something you don’t often encounter in the West of Scotland. As a wedding photographer, one thing I always do is a thorough check of a venue prior to the wedding photography, so I have locations in mind for every type of weather. When I was looking round the Waterside I identified the covered colonnade just outside the reception suite which was ideal for rain or bright sunshine. The quality of light was also lovely and soft so I knew I wanted to do some bridal portraits there which worked brilliantly. When it came to doing the group shots, I also decided to do them there as well as it was much cooler and made for a nice relaxed setting.
