Photographing a Wedding at Ayrshire Wedding Venue Sorn Castle

When Ailsa was looking for wedding photographers in Ayrshire she was looking for a photographer who had a style that would complement her plans for her wedding day and get the best out of the wedding venue she had chosen which was Sorn Castle between Ayr and Mauchline.

As an actress she was interested in the fact I’ve spent many years photographing professional theatre and opera which in many ways isn’t that different from photographing a wedding.

You essentially have a live event, which you only have one chance to get right while at the same time being able to get the best shots in a limited amount of time whilst not getting in the way of disrupting the actual event itself.

This aspect of wedding photography is very important to me. Whilst you are always striving to create stunning images, you have to remember that someone’s wedding isn’t an opportunity to create images for your portfolio. It’s a couple’s and an entire families unique and very special day. In fact it’s a privilege to be given the responsibility of recording that. It’s my job as a wedding photographer to fit seamlessly into the couple’s special day, making it enjoyable and fun for them.

“This portrait was taken at Sorn Castle in Ayrshire. As a wedding photographer I always check a venue beforehand to see where all the best places for photographs are. For this particular photograph my assistant helped set up some portable lighting which gives the shot a little extra sparkle.

Sorn Castle is a particularly unique venue for wedding photographers in Ayrshire, as the castle is only available to hire for functions. This means that when you book it for your wedding you and your guests are the only people there and there are no members of the public around as you might find at other venues.

The number of potential locations for wedding photography is also limitless. Sorn Castle itself has numerous rooms that can be used from the main hall with its magnificent staircase and the main drawing room with a large window looking out onto the grounds to the cosy bedrooms upstairs with their four poster beds and nooks and crannies. Some more unusual locations include the roof with its dramatic battlement views, the cellars and billiard room with an organ. One of my favourites at Sorn Castle is actually the cloakroom which has a wonderful rustic feel with its old walking sticks and umbrellas.

In the grounds you have paths that run alongside the River Ayr, a wonderful old bridge, mature trees and of course huge lawns which offer limitless possibilities. There is also a swing on a tree just outside Sorn castle which makes for some fun wedding photographs.

As a wedding photographer based in Ayr I know Sorn Castle very well but I still like to do a recce of the location beforehand just to check what the conditions are like on the day as they can vary dramatically from season to season and also day to day depending on what the weather has been like. All of these factors means that the possibilities for wedding photography are limitless and it’s hard to repeat the same shots. Every wedding is unique and that’s very much the way I like to approach them.
