Relaxed, Fun Wedding Photography at Ayrshire’s Gailes Hotel

As a natural wedding photographer, I’ve photographed weddings at a number of different venues in Ayrshire, Glasgow and other parts of Scotland, although this was my first time at the Gailes Hotel just outside Irvine for Jill and Iain’s wedding

When I’m not familiar with a venue I always so a recce beforehand so I went the week before to have a look around. As an Ayrshire wedding photographer who specialises in natural, candid photographs, classic backdrops are less important to me as I prefer to concentrate on the emotions and atmosphere of the day of the day rather than arrange all the shots. Instead, I like to create little moments in a natural way, so I’m looking for things like shade and areas where people can sit and relax or lean against.

One of the main features at the Gailes Hotel is a large winding staircase which leads from the wedding room down to an outdoor patio area at the bottom. This then leads out to a newly constructed Gazebo which overlooks an artificial pond. These were ideal to help me get the kind of shots I was looking for.

Another good thing about the Gailes Hotel is that it’s quite compact, so everything is very close together. This created a nice intimate atmosphere which made it easy for me to mingle with the guests and get lots of nice candid shots of everyone enjoying themselves. Jill and Iain had also hired a magician which made a nice point of focus for people to gather round. There were quite a few children at the wedding, who are always great subjects. As they tended to be playing outdoors I was able to flit between taking shots of them and popping back indoors to capture the adults.
