As a wedding photographer in Ayrshire, the Turnberry Hotel is one location which offers many excellent opportunities for wedding photographs.
There is not only the hotel itself, which has great interiors and exteriors but also the grounds and a bit further away, the Turnberry Lighthouse which has recently been renovated and now houses the new half way house for golf course as well as a luxury apartment.
Not having been there since it was refurbished, I did a recce beforehand to see what had changed and identify areas for wedding photographs. I’d met Karen and David prior to their wedding day to discuss the photography, so I knew what type of areas I needed.
The initial long range forecast had been for rain, so I’d expected to be doing most of the photography indoors but I always plan for the unexpected and after a strong downpour in the morning, it actually cleared up to be a beautiful day.
Although, everyone dreams of a glorious sunny day for their wedding, it does create a few challenges for a wedding photographer, but with the right experience and equipment, these can easily be overcome.
I’d identified a lovely area close to the main entrance to the Turnberry Hotel which is often overlooked for wedding photos but offers lovely soft light and a nice uncluttered background. I took some more formal shots of Karen and David at the front of the hotel but I knew as I was taking these that this location would be my favourite.
Myself and my assistant where treated to a lovely meal while everyone had theirs. Afterwards, there was time between the end of the meal and the start of the reception for some shots at the Turnberry Lighthouse.
The hotel provided a concierge who kindly drove us down. By this time the sun had started to drop, which made for some lovely lighting, especially when I used it to backlight Karen and David with the lighthouse behind them.
