If you’re looking for a wedding venue in Ayrshire, then Sorn Castle is ideal from a wedding photographer’s point of view.
I talked about this in my earlier blog but it’s worth exploring again as venues change and while this sometimes closes off some possibilities for wedding photographs, others open up.
When Julie and Helen approached me to photograph their wedding at Sorn Castle, two things were important to them, one was finding a wedding photographer who was familiar with the venue and the other was a photographer who would embrace a gay wedding. Surprisingly, this was the first gay wedding I’d been asked to photograph but I was very happy to do so and enjoyed it immensely. As a wedding photographer, I thought the dynamics might be slightly different in terms of poses but when you have two people who are very much in love, I quickly discovered that all that just falls into place itself.
As always, I did a recce of the castle and grounds prior the wedding. There were a couple of changes since I last photographed a wedding there. The first was the foot bridge which crosses the river was closed. It did make for some wonderful shots as you can see in my earlier blog but I must admit even then it was a bit shaky and probably in need of closing on safety grounds. The other main change was the addition of a permanent function marquee at the side of the castle. This blocked a view of the castle I had used previously, so it was time to have a look at alternatives.
Previously, the marquee had been on the lawn at the from of the castle but as this area was now free it provided a good area for group shots with a view of Sorn Castle behind. Another area which I hadn’t used previously was the rather grand doorway. There was quite a lot of sun on the day of the wedding, so some shade is always welcome. It was perfect for some shots of Julie and Helen.
One old favourite is the swing which hangs from a tree just in front of the castle. Previously, I’d had the bride being pushed on the swing but the direction of the sun at this time of year made that more difficult, so I opted instead for Julie and Helen sitting which made for a lovely relaxed portrait of them together.
