Winter Wedding at Ayrshire’s Enterkine House Hotel – a Photographer’s Perspective

Emma and Matthew had their winter wedding at the Enterkine Country House Hotel just outside Ayr in November and chose me as their wedding photographer to capture their special day because they liked my natural, relaxed style.

Although we were only spending 5 minutes at a time outside because of the cold it doesn’t show in the photos.

As a wedding photographer in Ayrshire, I’ve often said that it’s very rare for your wedding day to be completely spoilt by the weather. Their wedding day was actually very sunny but the forecast was for strong chilly winds, so it wasn’t the ideal kind of weather for shots outdoors.

I’m very much a fly on the wall during the bridal preparations which lets me capture moments like this of Emma opening a letter from Matthew with one of her bridesmaids.

I know Enterkine House very well, having photographed a number of weddings there but knowing the challenges the weather would produce, I arrived extra early to check out areas of the hotel we could use in case we couldn’t’ go outside.

Fortunately, the weather in the early part of the day was really nice. I managed to get shots of Matthew with his best men and ushers outside as well as Emma with her bridesmaids.

I cover most of the day naturally as it unfolds, like this shot of Emma and Matthew arriving at their reception.

The main challenge was after the ceremony when it was getting very cold indeed. One good thing about Enterkine House is that the grounds and outside areas are all very close to the hotel, so it was very easy to pop out for 5 minutes and then allow Emma and Matthew to go back inside again to get warmed up. In situations like these, I always encourage couples to just go with the flow and enjoy the moment, so after doing this a few times it just became fun to see to work out how long we could pop outside for.

It’s not often that you get two best men but it worked a treat! I like capturing people’s expressions during the speeches.

The most important thing though is how this affected the photography and thankfully I managed to get a lovely relaxed set of wedding photographs which they were delighted with.

I like to take some detail shots during the day of things like the bride’s flowers, shoes, dress and in this case the candles on the tables during the reception as it helps tell the story of the day.
