Chat About the Day

The location of Boswell’s Coach House was very important for Nicola and Craig as Nicola is a vet and Craig comes from a farming background. The location also provided the right atmosphere for them to enjoy the day and relax with friends and family. Before the wedding, I met with Nicola and Craig at Boswell’s Coach House for a coffee to have a chat about the day. One request which Nicola had was to have some shots taken with some of the farm animals, so we took a walk through the farm to see some of the locations and chat about some ideas of what might work.

Some Family Photos

On the day itself, Nicola didn’t want any shots of the bridal preparations but she did ask me to pop into her house beforehand to take some shots of her wedding dress and flowers. After that I drove up to the venue to catch Craig greeting their wedding guests and to get some family group photos which they’d asked for. As it was a very bright sunny day, I chose an area next to marquee where there was some shade. This also had the advantage of being very close by so it was easy to ask people to come over for photographs.

Candid Wedding Photographs

After this I took candid photographs of Craig and their wedding guests waiting for Nicola to arrive.  The marquee provided some great natural light, so I was able to take natural shots of Nicola coming down the aisle and the two of them during the service.

Walking Backwards

Another thing we had planned doing after our earlier meeting was a confetti shot. It was quite a tricky one to take as it involved me walking backwards down stairs but worth it to get the shot!

Natural Shots

After taking a few more family photos, I spent some time just with Nicola and Craig. When I’m photographing couples on their own, my approach is to create little moments by suggesting an area where they can stand, sit or walk and then just encourage them to enjoy the moment. During my earlier recce, I found a nice farm gate which provided some shade, so I asked them to lean over that while I took some shots. While I was doing this one of the bridesmaids popped over and chatted to them which was also a good opportunity to distract them while I kept taking shots. These were probably some of my favourites from the day.

After this we went for a walk down the avenue which leads up to Boswell’s Coach House which also made for some great shots. We were planning to take some more shots in the evening, so I left them to mingle with their guests while I took some more candids before the meal and during the speeches which produced some great expressions.

Evening Photos

I love taking evening photographs as the light is much softer, especially in the summer. As planned, we headed out to the field where the cows where, accompanied by Angus who was the Master of Ceremonies as well as the farm manager. We’d originally planned to photograph Nicola and Craig in the field but seeing the amount of mud we decided against it. It was probably a wise choice as the cows where a bit lively. In fact one of them pushed against the gate quite hard moving a few feet which Nicola and Craig found quite amusing. It made for some fun shots though!

As we were walking back, I noticed some amazing evening light hitting the farm buildings, so I asked Nicola and Craig to stand on the stairs so I could take some shots. It was a great way to finish off the evening before capturing their first dance.
