This makes for a very relaxed atmosphere, so I was able to wonder around quite freely taking natural candid shots. It also meant there were no time pressures.

Sorn Castle had a special significance for Carrie and Neil as Neil’s parents were married at the local church and he’d grown up in Ayrshire before his family moved to the US, where he now lives with Carrie. As a venue for a romantic wedding elopement it was perfect.
Butterfly
When I arrived, Carrie was getting ready in one of the upstairs attic rooms with her sister. It was to be quite a small wedding with about 20 guests, so there weren’t many other people about. Their plan to was get married in Scotland and then have a bigger reception in the US.
While I was photographing them I noticed a butterfly sitting on the windowsill which was quite unusual for the time of year. Carrie was very moved by this as she said it reminded her of a relative who’d passed away, so I took some shots as a wee reminder. Little details like this can be very powerful reminders when looking back on the day.
When Carrie was ready, I popped downstairs to get some shots of Neil who’d been keeping an eye on their son who was sleeping.
Rain On Me
The wedding ceremony was held in the chapel which was perfect for an intimate service. It started with a lovely candle lighting where both their parents lit candles to represent joining the families together.
After the service I took Carrie and Neil outside for some shots but shortly after it started to rain. I don’t let myself get worried about things like that as I always have contingency plans and Sorn Castle had plenty of locations inside.
Creating Little Moments
After taking a few family photos, it cleared up so we popped back outside where I was able to get some nice relaxed shots of Carrie and Neil walking along the drive with the castle in the background. We then headed back to the tree where we’d been earlier. When spending time with a couple I like to create little moments rather than tell them what to do, so I just encouraged them to enjoy the moment while I took shots. There was a wonderful moment where they just naturally touched their heads together which made for a lovely romantic shot.
Privileged
As it was quite a small wedding with just 20 guests, Carrie and Neil decided not to have an evening reception, so I took some candid shots during the meal of people chatting.
When everyone had left for the evening, Carrie and Neil asked if I could take some shots of them having a first dance on their own. By this time it was just me, her father and sister there, so I felt very privileged to capture this very intimate moment for them.
