Wedding Photography in a Phone Box – A Natural Choice!

As a natural wedding photographer I like to cover as much of the day as possible taking candid shots as the day unfolds but I also take a few slightly more set up shots if couples want to do that.

The speeches at the evening reception are always a great time for capturing feelings and emotions.

One location in New Lanark which Ruth and Chris wanted me to use for a shot was the old red telephone box which sits at the side of the road as you drive in.

I’d looked at this before but had always passed on it in favour of other areas as the light wasn’t quite right. On a really bright sunny day, the telephone box is in dark shadow and to try and photograph a couple in it you’d also be looking into the sun. However, on an overcast rainy day in winter, it’s a different story. The light is nice and diffuse so you don’t get harsh shadows and the red frame of the telephone box stands out brilliantly against the white light of the sky. It also complemented Ruth’s fantastic red hair and leather jacket! Later on we headed out for some orchestral manoeuvres in the dark but that’s another story.

When we headed over to take this shot it was raining so the umbrella was actually needed.

Rather than try hide it I thought it was better to make it part of the shot. I always encourage couples to just be themselves and enjoy the moment and this turned our to be Ruth and Chris’s favourite shot from the day.
