Winter Wedding Photography

As we head into the middle of winter, your thoughts might be turning more towards summer but a winter wedding also offer photographers other possibilities for natural wedding photography.

As a wedding photographer there are two main things I think about. The first is about capturing the wedding day in a natural, relaxed way.

The second and equally important one is to capture it in good light. It’s the light that creates atmosphere and illuminates people’s faces. It’s also often the quality of the light which makes the difference between good wedding photography and outstanding wedding photography.

Even on dull overcast days you can get great shots. Bright colours really stand out.

The winter does have it’s limitations and although the day is shorter, when the sun does shine it is always low in the sky which makes for wonderful atmospheric shots. In the middle of summer you usually have to wait till the evening to get a nice golden evening light with long shadows.

Even bad weather and overcast days don’t have to be a disaster. Some of my favourite weddings photographs have been taken on dull overcast days when it’s raining.

It’s all about being creative and working with what you have. The soft diffused light provided by overcast days has its own advantages and colours really stand out in a way that they might not against a bright blue sky and green grass.

The low sun in winter can create some magical moments.

Inevitably though, it will get darker earlier and that’s when you need to rely on artificial light.

Fortunately, I have years of experience with this and I always carry portable lighting which allows me to be creative, even when it’s pitch black!

Ainsley and George wanted a shot outside at the Carlton Hotel in Prestwick. Although there is an area for outside ceremonies, in the winter it is pitch black. Time to get creative with the lighting and sparklers!
